SEARS
I imagine a reuse of the space. Why not embrace the emerging cultural norms of low-waste, consciously consumptive living?
I envision a second hand component, handled elegantly, as can be modeled by any number of the popular pop up consignment sales that dot the landscape.
I imagine empowering kids to shop on their own, by providing a checklist of wardrobe essentials (i.e. three pairs of pants, five shirts, one jacket, etc.), and support from “stylists” (teen coaches). Parents can hang out in the lounge, which will offer healthy snacks, juice and tapas, while the kids shop.
There will also be a maker space component. A “Sneaker Lab”, where children can learn about the designing and building shoes, while repurposing textiles, and recyclables. Space for music, dancing, and instruments. Space for building, and practice with tools. And space for Art.
I think the legacy of Sears would be well-served by reinvention. As a bastion of service and dependability, I can think of few iconic brands better suited to lead commerce and innovation into the future, while honorably serving our community than Sears.
